I just bought the Men of the Year issue and had to choose which cover to buy. I went for Clint Eastwood. I love how great Clint looks despite being old enough to be my father. (I should ask my mom about that.) Anyway, there I was, reading The Style Guy, and I came to this question about double-breasted blazers from a poor fellow who thought maybe you have to be royalty to wear them. After reassuring him that commoners can share in this look I went on to declare “The double-breasted jacket is inherently dressy, so never wear a button-down shirt with it.” I just say that even though I don’t believe in rules as much as common sense, this is a principle that I’ve been following as long as I can remember.

But I think I was wrong about that being a rule. It came to me late at night this week when in my pre-unconsciousness routine I tuned in to TCM and there was Fred Astaire, whirling around in a film called Yolanda and the Thief. It’s a 1945 Vincente Minnelli film, and like many of his other films it’s visually stunning. The design looks like Salvador Dalí had a hand in it. It’s a fantasy about a rakish swindler (played by Fred, natch) in a fictitious South American country. The production is so elaborate and over-the-top that I think it broke the record for losing money at the time. Anyway, Fred was whirling the lovely and athletic Louise Bremer around like a top and I noticed that the always impeccable hoofer was wearing, yes, a button-down shirt with a double-breasted suit!

By the way, Lucille Bremer’s breasts are nowhere near that size.

He also wrote and illustrated all those Madeleine books and wrote maybe the funniest novel about Hollywood ever—Dirty Eddie. And for you New York cocktail bar aficionados, he’s the fellow who did the murals in, you guessed it, Bemelman’s Bar at the Hotel Carlyle, one of the very best places to have a drink in Manhattan. Someday I will go on and on at great length on the greatness of Ludwig Bemelmans, but this is about double-breasteds with button-downs, so….

A revelation! But one expects nothing less from Fred and from Mr. Vincente Minnelli. Minnelli was a true artist, which occasionally had a negative impact on his box office, but if he hadn’t gone totally over the top we wouldn’t have such films as Cabin in the Sky, The Pirate, Brigadoon, or An American in Paris (all with Gene Kelly), Kismet, the Bad and the Beautiful, or Lust for Life (with Kirk Douglas), Gigi, Designing Woman… Minnelli’s films are incredibly stylish and sometimes excessive, but in a good way. Andrew Sarris once wrote that Minnelli believed more in beauty than in art. Today that might not be such a bad thing.

Anyway, seeing Fred in his double-breasted suit made me reconsider a sartorial principal I have lived by since…well, ever since I’ve had a double-breasted jacket. It just goes to show, the rules of men’s dressing are not legally enforceable any more than any other form of common sense. And the people who really know the rules can break them, often with excellent results. Fred is never wrong.

So I put on a Black Fleece by Thom Browne for Brooks Brothers checked button-down collar shirt, this fairly new tie from Agnès B. (which sadly just closed their Soho men’s store), and my old gray double-breasted suit from John Pearse, who’s more open than ever in London’s Soho, and I must say, it worked. The secret, I believe, is that it has to be a fairly high-closing double-breasted jacket.

But there isn’t much in the rule book for how to dress when the bride is a man or when the wedding theme is “We hate weddings and don’t care!” Still, no matter how unorthodox the ceremony, you are always expected to do two things: (a) wear a suit that says “I’m ready to party” and (b) dance at the reception to “Bust a Move.” In fact, the wedding suit may be the one sartorial tradition in which men actually have it harder than women. Guys have no breathing room: The formula is always trousers, shirt, jacket, tie. This means the bride has barely made it down the aisle and you already have so many sweat patches you look like a human Rorschach test.

So how can a man get some relief?

To stand a chance, try a suit in a lightweight cotton, like seersucker or khaki. If you’re stretching your dollars and need something you can wear to more than just weddings and derbies, there is such a thing as summer-weight wool. Michael Andrews, owner of Michael Andrews Bespoke in N.Y.C., suggests fabric eight ounces or less. “You can get double duty out of it,” he says, “because wool is office-appropriate.”

But if I’ve learned anything, it’s that the jacket isn’t all that important. After an hour, it always ends up on the back of a chair. That goes for the shoes, too, since I’m usually barefoot by cake time, dancing with the crazy party aunt. (Why does everyone have a crazy party aunt?)

And that’s another thing that’s changing fast: These days, being half-dressed is almost encouraged. Remember, we live in the reality-show era. An era obsessed with street fashion and paparazzi photos of unkempt celebrities outside Planet Smoothie. Likewise, wedding photographers are increasingly being hired to provide candid photos rather than formal arrangements of the wedding party. “Everyone still wants you to catch the first kiss,” says Ivan de Petrovsky, a Cape Cod-based photographer. “But a lot more people are asking for documentary photography.”

Now your wedding wardrobe is as much about the handsomely disheveled post-ceremony version of your outfit as it is the put-together look that walks out of the hotel. It’s about what you’re wearing when you’re caught doing something unexpectedly memorable—like crunking to “My Humps” with the party aunt. The key is a slim-fit dress shirt (no more hiding under your jacket). And don’t forget those finishing touches: Now is the time to show off your old-timey braces or the white bucks you splurged on but never wear.

Really, it’s just about planning ahead a little bit. Because when it’s August and you’re standing in a field in 100 percent humidity wearing a business suit, you’ll wish you’d thought things through. Or that you had enough balls to wear a gown.
